Batgirl is a DC Comics superheroine and one of Batman's closest allies. In her secret identity, she is Barbara Gordon, adoptive daughter of police comissioner James Gordon, who is also an ally of Batman. When she was 16, Barbara's parents were killed in a car accident, so her uncle Jim and his wife adopted and took her to live in Gotham City. There, Barbara developed an interest in Batman, following his many adventures. Wanting become a superhero, Barbara trained in martal arts and studied in criminal science. She also developed a female variation of Batman's costume. Eventually, Barbara helped Batman and Robin capture Killer Moth. Acknowledging her potential, Batman allowed her to be part of his crimefighting team, assuming the name Batgirl.
After many adventures, Barbara became disatissfied with her career as Batgirl and considered quitting. Then, the Joker kidnapped her and shot her in the back, leaving her paraplegic. Following this experience, Barbara renewed her interest in crimefighting, this time using her skills with computers to become superhero hacker Oracle. In this position, Barbara became the leader and tactical advisor of the Birds of Prey, an all-female superhero team that got involved in missions Batman himself could not perform.
After four years, it was revealed that Barbara's paralysis was temporary, and she regained full mobility of her legs. Currently, she has returned to the streets as Batgirl.
